The short bowel syndrome secondary to the massive intestinal resection is characterized by intractable diarrhea with impaired absorption of nutrients ultimately leading to malnutrition and weight loss. Recent advances in the knowledge of pathophysiology of short bowel syndrome, technology of modern anesthesia & surgical skill and intravenous hyperalimentation have revolutionized early and immediate postoperative treatment. But it is still considered very difficult problem to keep long-term good prognosis because of the late ill effects on nutrition following massive small bowel resection.
Four cases of massive bowel resection performed during from 1972 to June 1974 at Kynng Hee Medical Center is reported brief literature review especially on the postoperative management.
